Western Europe re-conciliated with Germany in twenty years after WWII, why has Eastern Europe not reconciled with Russia since 1989 to 2014, before the war in Ukraine?

1. **Historical Grievances and Occupation**:

   - Eastern European countries experienced significant oppression under Soviet control during and after World War II. The forced imposition of communist regimes, political purges, and economic exploitation left lasting resentment and distrust toward Russia.

2. **Russian Influence and Interference**:

   - Post-1989, Russia often meddled in the internal affairs of Eastern European countries, supporting pro-Russian political factions and using economic leverage, such as energy dependency, to exert influence. This created a climate of suspicion and antagonism toward Russia.

3. **NATO and EU Expansion**:

   - The expansion of NATO and the EU into Eastern Europe was seen by Russia as a threat. Eastern European countries sought membership in these organizations as security guarantees against potential Russian aggression, further straining relations.

4. **Economic and Political Instability**:

   - The transition to democracy and market economies in Eastern Europe was tumultuous. Russia's own political and economic instability hindered the development of stable and cooperative relations. The lack of a Marshall Plan-like initiative for Eastern Europe exacerbated economic disparities and fostered resentment.
